Summer Solstice 5K takes a hiatus

June 18, 2017

SAULT STE. MARIE — Girls on the Run of the Eastern Upper Peninsula announces that due to limited personnel it had to put the Summer Solstice 5K Fun Run on hiatus for this year.

“It was a difficult decision for our Board to make,” GOTR EUP Board Chair Cindy Merkel said. “Not only was it a missed opportunity for bringing the community together, from small children to spry elders, but also our Council’s largest annual fund raiser.”

One of the main areas where the group came up short this year was finding a volunteer willing to take on the duties of the race director.

“While the activities involved in organizing the event and the camaraderie found doing so are quite rewarding, the position does require a time commitment over several months,” added Merkel. “We are certain though that there is someone out there who shares the Councils passion and mission for setting preteen girls onto a path towards becoming self-assured women and who would welcome an opportunity to join our team of dedicated volunteers in bringing back the Summer Solstice 5K in 2018.”

Girls on the Run is a nationally based program whose mission is to inspire preteen girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced base curriculum that integrates running activities.

Girls on the Run of the Eastern Upper Peninsula is a local council of the national organization and the only Michigan council located in the Upper Peninsula.

The privately funded, non-profit council is largely volunteer with a part-time program coordinator. If you are interested in bringing the program into your community, would like to find out how to get involved, or simply want to learn more about the program please call at 906-632-8109 or visit their website, www.gotreup.org.
